Bitty Eggs

A few months ago, I got some Bantam crossed pullets. Bantams are known for their tendency to go broody (refuse to leave a nest, stop laying eggs and try to hatch something... they will do this with or without fertile eggs, and often without eggs at all!) Most dual purpose chickens (which I have) don't tend to go broody that often, and part of my master plan is to allow broody hens to do my dirty work in hatching and raising chicks for my flock! SO. Enter Bantam chickens. My friend Holly, that I got my first chickens from, and also my goats, offered them to me. I took four. She uses her bantam eggs for her own family, because they are much smaller than normal eggs, and she doesn't sell them to her customers.
One of the bantams started LAYING!!
OH.
MY.
GOSH.
They are SO cute!!

It's not easy to tell in this photo, but it's just under 2 inches long... the lighter egg is a normal chicken egg.
I tried putting them in an egg carton for better scale... the bantam egg is the one at the top left.

SO adorable!!
ETA: took a photo next a ruler.

Spring Bees

I went outside today and all I could hear was buzzing... I thought for sure there was a swarm of bees somewhere nearby... and then I realized.

The plum tree next to me was ALIVE with them. Which reminded me about the swarm that came to our place a little after we moved in here last year. It took up a home inside an old dead tree on the property. I didn't know how big the crevice they lived in was, so I worried this winter that the hive would not survive the winter. Seeing all the activity in the tree outside the house made me go check the dead tree...
THEY MADE IT!!
I'm really excited, and hoping REALLY hard that I'll have a hive to attract a swarm this year... and hoping that the wild hive makes it through another year here. It's such an amazing thing to literally be able to HEAR the life in the world around you.
