Houston, we have EGGS.

WE HAVE EGGS!!!
Travis came in today and asked if I'd checked the chickens lately... and I have been, but I hadn't opened up the hutch for a couple days...
Seems there might be a learning curve to WHERE we lay eggs...

There were TWO and I think, as I'm typing this, that SOMEONE may be laying a THIRD. I'll have to check on that.

PRETTY sure that they are coming from Marshmallow or Eggstacy.
11-106 by you.
That's Eggstacy on the bottom left, and Marshmallow on the right. Mallow is setting in the hutch right now...

  5. Yay! So exciting to find the first eggs. Hope you got some double-yolkers too.

We placed a golf ball where we wanted them to lay - tricks them into thinking it must be a safe place to lay eggs if "one" is already there.

Worked for awhile but after a few months, they started laying elsewhere - we didn't know it at first; found about 5 all in the same spot!

  6. YOU are so lucky, it's been so cold here on the East Coast that the ducks
have gone into hiding and not an egg in sight...One of my ducks goes into the bottom of the rabbit house and lays her eggs there ...I hope we will get some soon.

  11. Hi Rachel

Could you ask Houston where my daughters eggs have got too..... chickens of course...... 'Lost is space'....Maybe... her hens do not like the snow and have stopped laying. Any ideas to get them going again?

How is your move going? All well I hope.

    Julie

  12. Congratulations! It's a little miracle that happens nearly every day, and you'll never look at eggs the same way again. How fun!

  13. Julie, I've heard that feeding them warm food (like cooked oatmeal) can make them feel warmer and lay... Also using false lights to fool them into thinking it's spring... but winter is naturally a time when they slow down (or stop in colder climates) egg production. I've heard that they only have a certain amount of eggs in them, and that "forcing" production can mean that they will stop laying altogether sooner. Not sure if this is true, but I personally don't do anything to force them to lay.

  15. At my in-laws, they have new neighbours, a young couple. They are trying to raise chickens. They have 6 I think. My sister in law saves greens and goes over to give them rather than junk them.
They have been getting some eggs. I hope that couple do well. They are energetic and trying out the rural farm thing.
