So just what IS art?
Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. ~Wikipedia
By definition, ART is what you MAKE. It doesn't say anything about whether or not you copied someone to learn a technique.** It doesn't say you can only use things to make it if you also made THEM. It doesn't say that EVERYONE has to agree that it's beautiful or appealing. Art like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. It doesn't MATTER if it's scrapbook papers, or cards, or photography, or yarn making, or sculpting, or gardening. WHATEVER it is, it's simply about the deliberate way that you put something together to MEAN SOMETHING, or to LOOK GOOD.
Fine art is another buzz term that gets thrown around a lot. But what IS fine art?
Fine art describes an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than utility. This type of art is often expressed in the production of art objects[2] using visual and performing art forms, including painting, sculpture, music, dance, theatre, architecture, photography and printmaking.~Wikipedia
Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic. Other terms that overlap with folk art are naïve art, Pop art,
No matter WHO you are.
No matter WHAT you create.
ART lives inside you.
Even within yourself, what you find frustrating because it didn't come out the way you intended isn't any LESS art. Even in it's definition, art is in the PROCESS.
Let your art SHOW. Don't let someone else tell you what your art can or cannot be. It's not up to them.
Certainly, one hopes that others will like and enjoy their art.
But be cautious in who you allow to have INFLUENCE over you.
Be cautious in how you give and take critiques. In the end, no matter how "worthy" the person giving a critique is, your art is YOURS. THAT is what makes it valuable. It's not about living up to the standards that other people have set for you. Make your art for yourself. When you allow yourself that freedom, the people who need your art will come.
There are people who will criticize, and pick, and pull at what is and is not art. They are not important. THEY do not "get" it. It's time we support eachother. There is room in this world for art to live in ALL of us. Some of us will make money at it. Some of us will not. THAT has nothing to do with letting your art SHOW, and allowing your art to LIVE.
**Please note that I am not condoning outright copying of other artist' work and calling it your own. I do believe that it is in the nature of INSPIRATION and art to use another artist's ideas and build on them. If you have questions about copyright, there is an excellent on line resource HERE that explains it in good legal detail.

You go girl!
This is so true.
I hate it when artists try to have a secret society and try to hide their discoveries from you. UGH on them!
Thank you for that post. I have been trying to figure out my art and what defines it. It helps to hear that exactly what you said. Thanks! I love your art. It is so individual and interesting. I love reading this blog. :)
This is a marvelous statement and beautifully written - I too really needed to hear it!!! Boy did I, Thanks for saying it...
Rachael
You have put into words what we all think and need to remember
'We are artists'
and no one can take that away from us.
What an eloqent post.

Very well said!
I agree that art comes from the emotional centre, but therein lies the problem. I have been an artist for many years both privately and commercially. What I found was that everyone, no matter who, is an art critic including myself at times. ( although nowadays I try to be more aware of it)
When we work for only reward whether in the form of compliments or gratuities we taint our art forms with a jealous edge.
What I have found, is that if you work against that presumption, (mainly in yourself) all else will follow in your creativity. The artist community is "clickish" and a very jealous society, although everyone claims not to be "one of those people".
To be a creative soul requires no external reward, only the absolute pleasure of making effort, and the joy of self discovery.
At either end of the spectrum are opposites (Compliment vs Criticism), to be identified with one or the other is not good. To be aware of both yet neutral, is better...
Thank you for your thoughts and self awareness, for it led me to creative contemplation. I always look forward to your posts even though, I sometimes may not agree.

Amen!
I like this post very much. It really resonated with me as I am currently on a journey of exploring being artistic and creative as a means of, hopefully, changing my life. I belive that whatever we create is art, when it comes from that place inside us which is uniquely us. And that the process of creating it is just as important to us as the finished result. I also believe that art/creativity have the power to heal and so is unique to each person. I think it is very beautiful when a person finds their "art". People can be very judgemental but only the person creating the art really knows where it came from and what it means to them.
Rachel. Thank you for sending out this post today. I am not trained in writing nor in any area of visual art. EVERYTHING I do and have done comes from desire and decision. My daughter tells people...Not because she has heard it from me or anyone else, but because I believe children see TRUTH, that her Momma is an artist.
"Make your art for yourself. When you allow yourself that freedom, the people who need your art will come."
My father in law told me when I started to blog to BE MYSELF. Don't compromise your ART. He is a "professional" photographer. He wishes that he could do his art without needing to make money. I use to do my artistic things to SELL, now I do it all for me and let's just say the expansion of it all is AMAZING. WRITING FOR ME and what is on the inside of me. Just yesterday I felt compelled to write about something and my comments were much less than normal. I thought...this post must have been a risk, but you know what...it is me and I am going to put it out there because as you said, those who need it, will come, or WANT it for that matter.
YOU and your work have inspired me. I have always been a scrapper, but now just last night I decided to do something on canvas with multi media elements. I AM SO EXCITED and just sketched this last night. Your work has inspired me to do so.
I hope to enjoy one of your dolls live and in person one day as my own resources expand, but until that happens. I just want to say THANK YOU.
Oh, I wanted to share this as well.
Last July I was discussing ART with my child and whether she would take a "formal" art class.
She said this, "Momma, EVERYONE is an artist, EVERYONE is TRYING to create something."
I love the simplicity of thought in my daughter's experience.
Thank you for this post.
Rachel..
Bravo girl...May I quoate you and put it on my blog...You are phenominal at everything you do.
xoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Let me know...
Ok Rachel...I posted it...

Rachel..I found you through Sonia..whom I adore!! I just read your article there and posted a lengthy comment - LOL!! Rachel...BRAVO!! Wonderful post and so very well said.
I do pen and ink mainly.I get alot of the..oh you draw?? stuff. I was recently rejected an Esty group..they told me "Good luck with your little black and white drawings, we are afraid your work will just not fit into our group."
I laughed and started my own group..86 artists and going strong..I still giggle!! I ignore the critics. Amazing post - BRAVO!
Nice to meet you I will be back!!
Namaste, Sarah
I just love you for this (and many other things ;-))
I just love you for this (and many other things ;-))
i've often felt that other artist crushed more artist-spirit's than critics & unsupportive friends and family combined. that's what i've seen anyways.
and as for copying, many of "The Great Masters" learned their craft, sitting in museums with pencil and paper, copying "The Great Masters" of the generations before them. It's a great learning technique.
ART comes from heART. If it doesn't come from the heart how can we call it art? nikgee
Thank you for this post. I hope it is not written from personal experience, because I can't imagine anyone being even a little bit negative about your art!
What you say is so true! I always considered myself to be 'artistically challenged' until the past year - and my blog. It was the encouragement of other artists that have made me change my view of all things art. Heart.
I totally agree with you. Art comes from the soul, the imagination, the heart and the also the brain. Great post!
Hear, hear!
And this makes me feel much better about using a lot of the photos of your work.
Let's free ourselves from tyranny, and make interesting and pretty things!
A really excellent and well written post. I'd respond further, but I just had surgery on my left hand so I'm typing one handed. Just wanted to stop in and say thanks for your comment on mine. I'll be back later. =)
Great post!! And I'll add....a true artist wouldn't tell another artist that their work isn't art, because a true artist knows that art IS in the eye of the beholder (and within the creating artist).
I recently decided to distance myself from a group that was taking that mentality. I also removed myself from the influence of what prompted this post.
I have to admit I've done the same as the ones mentioned above though not anywhere near the extent. I think we all have at some point.
The thing that puts me in my place and gives me a true sense of "What the hell am I doing?" is putting myself in the other persons shoes.
How absolutely devastated would I be if I allowed someone (and I have before) crush my creative spirit? It's miserable and completely heartbreaking.
I try my absolute best to avoid inflicting that on someone else.
