BUT after just a couple days, they were THERE one night when I went out, and they haven't needed catching since!! I love it. They REALLY do come home to roost.
Some things I've learned on this adventure so far:
Although I know that other Chicken Farmers do it, MY chickens didn't take to using a rabbit water bottle at ALL. So we changed.
When "they" say hen houses need ventilation, they MEAN it.
When you are making ventilation with a drill, that means a LOT of holes.
You don't NEED a nest for every hen. They will share. Two nests will work just fine for four hens.
Speaking of FOUR...
I should be finishing off the flock this week!! Another friend of mine has pullets that I can come and take! I can't wait to have them ALL!!

This is seriously the coolest thing ever. I'm getting the biggest kick out of your chicks and all the stories. Keep 'em coming!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your chicken lessons! Rachel.
ReplyDeleteI love hens.
Just passing by to say hi and how much I'm missing your 'visits'.
Cheers,:)
Betty
Your girls are so cute! I fell in love with my "ladies" 4 years ago, and since losing all but 2 to a cougar, have taken precautions to prevent a repeat. This year I added 11 more ladies. We enjoy them so much. Chickens have very distinct personalities, you know. In fact, one of the new Plymouth Rocks has fallen in love with my daughter's toes ...
ReplyDeleteI was talking to Boy Chris today about how I want chickens, and it seems like he may actually be game! This is different from when I mentioned it a few months ago. Probably not any time soon, but who knows?! I'm sure if I do go ahead and get some, I'll be coming to you for advice.
ReplyDeleteSo much fun - thanks for the basics! It's amazing how fruitful (egg-full? *Groan*) this must be for the soul as well. Clytie - sorry to hear about the loss. Keep the info (& great photos!) coming!

ReplyDeleteSo did you learn that they needed more ventilation because of the smell or what? I'm just curious. I so wish I lived on a farm!
ReplyDeleteYour chicken lessons are great. I wish we had a farm!! How fun!
ReplyDeleteChickens are so much fun..We have 3 roosters and 15 hens ...the eggs are delicious!
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be getting on really well with your girls! Looking for the eggs is the best thing...and they taste so much better too! Just remember that when they first start to lay eggs, they don't have any yolks in them!
ReplyDeleteYou'll learn as you go along!
Best wishes!

A cool and astonishing thing about chickens is their balance. You should see them running. Their body movies in various angles, but the head and neck stays absolutely still. Here's a video describing this ... enjoy.
