Meet the Artist

I was keeping Macs entertained just the other day, and he was gluing mini popsicle sticks, and painting with water colors when he exclaimed..
"Mom!! I'm an artist!"
I can't tell you how proud I was, and how happy it made me to hear him say that about himself! As he was painting... he was talking to himself about his process. He put green on his brush... and said
"Here's the Graaasss...." then a split second later, and in the SAME sweet peaceful voice and a new color on his brush... "and now the Bloooood....."
Yes. Even in art... he is a boy, after all. Apparently, on the page, as he painted, the blood spontaneously combusted... and caught fire... but the guy didn't die. He has special powers, and the fire tickled him instead.
In the course of his artist' discovery, Macs noted that PBS Kids has artists on it, and that since he was an artist now, he would probably be on PBS Kids.
:)
We decided that being an artist on mommy's blog was probably even better. So without further ado, I give you my interview, with my artist, Macs.

RW: Macs, how long have you been an artist?
MW: (shrugging) Hmm! Only for three days.
RW: What made you want to become an artist?
MW: The artist on PBS kids. There's only artist there.
RW: Who is that Artist?
MW: I don't know what name he is.
RW: What do you like about his art?
MW: It's 'cause he knows, like, about the world. He paints the world.. he can make grass like I can.
RW: What's your favorite thing about your art?
MW: I make awesome ones.
RW: What would you like to tell the world about your art?
MW: My art is very awesome, but I always think that I should make some more art. The art that I'm doing, is very important, but I like to do all of it by myself.
RW: Why is it important?
MW: Because I make them important.
RW: How does art make you feel?
MW: It makes me happy, and it makes me really excited to do some more.
RW: What kind of art do you like to do?
MW: I like to do the future, and guys...and, sometimes I like to do dirt and ice. You gotta get blue for the ice, and then if you want to get the ice, you just paint it everywhere. And, the dirt, you just get, um, brown, then, make little tiny things. Or you can make a line for dirt.
RW: Anything else you'd like to say about the art you've been making?
MW: and the art that is important, I can do 'em, and the world is all art that I can do.
RW: Who should do art?
MW: Everybody should do art except mom. Oh, and dad, because I don't want mom to do art with me. But you can watch ME do art. Then you could be an art watcher.
RW: Thanks, Macs, for our interview! It was really nice watching you make art yesterday. I hope that we can do art together sometime, I promise to watch you make art. Even if we are doing art together.
MW: Thank you very much. Goodbye everyone!

This interview made me realize that I haven't been the artful mommy I want to be. I don't want my kids to EVER doubt that they are artists. That their work is good enough. That they can claim to BE artists. I want them to know that being artful is something that is in all of us. Creating is part of who they are. I want them to understand that feeding their creative soul is important in the same way that feeding the spiritual soul is. I want them to know that art is freedom. I'll be thinking about ways to teach them this. I want to always hear "the world is all art that I can do."

I have a serious question for Macs.

Macs, can I buy some of your artwork. I need to fill my favorite room with it.

So Macs, can I buy something for 5 dollars?

Thank you. Macs is my new favorite artist-evah.

Oh and maybe Macs you should do some art shows - cause I know I could use some pointers on how to paint grass. Think about it. I know you are SUPER busy and all.

And I think you should do art with your mom - arts always more fun with two. :)
